"When a young street hustler, a retired bank robber, and a terrifying psychopath become entangled with some of the most terrifying and deranged elements of the criminal underworld, the United States government, and the entertainment industry, they must pull off a series of dangerous heists to survive in a ruthless city where they can trust no one, least of all each other."
Grand Theft Auto V (also known as Grand Theft Auto Five, GTA 5, GTAV[2], and Grand Theft Auto V: Story Mode[3]) is a Rockstar North video game. It is the fifteenth game in the Grand Theft Auto series and the fifth game in the series' HD Universe title.
The game takes place in Los Santos and its surrounding areas in 2013, and it tells the stories of three protagonists: Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton, and Trevor Philips. It takes place approximately five years after the events of Grand Theft Auto IV and eight years before the events of Grand Theft Auto Online's The Contract update.
The original edition was released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17th, 2013. The "enhanced" Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions were released on November 18th, 2014, and the PC version was released on April 14th, 2015. On March 15, 2022, a new "expanded and enhanced" version for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S was released. [4] Players can also buy access to Grand Theft Auto V as an add-on for the standalone versions of Grand Theft Auto Online.
The original edition was officially announced on October 25th, 2011, and the first trailer[5] for the game was released on November 2nd, 2011. The game was originally scheduled for a Spring 2013 release and even had posters printed to that effect, but it was actually released in the northern hemisphere in the fall of the same year. On July 15th, 2013, Rockstar announced that the game would be released in Japan on October 10th, 2013, almost a month after it was released in the rest of the world. [6] The "Enhanced" edition for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC was announced on June 9th, 2014, with pre-orders opening on June 10th. On June 11th, 2020, a "expanded and enhanced" version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S was announced for "late 2021," and a firm release date of March 15, 2022 was announced on May 19th, 2021.
The game was widely anticipated prior to its release as one of the most eagerly awaited video game titles to be released in 2013. Grand Theft Auto V was released to universal acclaim, receiving MetaCritic and GameRankings scores of 96 and above, as well as perfect scores from over 30 reviewers. The game sold 11,210,000 copies and earned $800,000,000 on its first day of release, breaking numerous records, and eventually earning $1,000,000,000 within three days of its release.
Gameplay
Grand Theft Auto V improves on nearly every mechanic from previous Grand Theft Auto games. In terms of driving, the vehicles have been greatly improved, with Rockstar applying more complex physics to them, such as making some cars slightly more stable on the ground. When compared to Grand Theft Auto IV's rocky, boat-like handling system, the driving mechanics feel more like a racing game, particularly the Midnight Club series. The shooting mechanics in the game are better in terms of feel and larger in size than the melee mechanics; however, melee has also improved over previous titles. The weapon selection has also been altered. Instead of the old method of selecting all of the weapons sequentially, there is now a Weapon Wheel, similar to the one featured in Red Dead Redemption, another Rockstar Games game. Grand Theft Auto V draws inspiration from a variety of previous Rockstar games, including Max Payne 3, Midnight Club, Manhunt, and Red Dead Redemption.
There are many unique features in the game, one of which is that when the players are playing as one of three protagonists in the game, the other two are living their independent daily lives, and the player may be surprised by what the characters are doing when they switch back into them. Another distinguishing feature is that the character swapping feature is implemented in a Google Earth-styled manner, as demonstrated during a Game Informer demo, which was shown to run smoothly and without lag. The PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions include an exclusive feature, first-person mode, in which the entire game can be played through the protagonist's eyes. This gameplay mode introduces a completely new way to play the game. Cars have detailed interiors that differ from one another, and the shooting is similar to that of a dedicated FPS game.
Yoga, triathlons, jet skiing, parachuting, tennis, golf, and scuba diving are among the new activities. Random events have also been added to the game, and they can appear at any time as the player explores the map. The mobile phone has returned from Grand Theft Auto IV, and it is used to call the player's contacts, surf the web, and save quickly. Another new feature that the player can use while in a vehicle is to give people the middle finger. Rockstar suggested that the player try this in different locations around Los Santos to see what happens; depending on where the player is, they will get different reactions from pedestrians.
Rockstar has also changed the pedestrian mechanics; some pedestrians can be seen at bus stops in East Los Santos, and the same people can be seen working in the gardens of the opulent mansions in Rockford Hills. Some minor mechanics that contribute to the environment and appearance of Los Santos occur at specific times of day, such as a sprinkler system being turned on in wealthy areas like Morningwood in the morning.
Vehicles
Grand Theft Auto V has more vehicles than any previous Grand Theft Auto game, including aeroplanes, helicopters, cars, utility vehicles, emergency service vehicles, motorcycles, and jet skis. Players can fly planes, which was a cut feature in Grand Theft Auto IV due to the map's limited size, but the feature is now available in Grand Theft Auto V due to the much larger, open world map. Submarines can also be used by players to explore the depths of the Pacific Ocean. The Rhino from previous GTA games has returned, complete with a new complex aiming system and a realistic tank depiction. When the car is flipped upside down, a new feature allows the player to roll it over.
As in previous games, a variety of vehicles spawn driving around the map that can be stolen. Various vehicles (as well as pedestrians) spawn in scenarios to make them more interactive with the map, such as delivery vans pulling out of alleyways, emergency vehicles responding, or vehicles pulling in and out of driveways, to give the game a sense of realism and make the map feel more alive. This behaviour was present to a lesser extent in GTA IV and has been revamped in GTA V, especially with the enhanced release of the game, where modified vehicles can spawn driving around, as well as the presence of the fully-controllable Jet, among other planes flying high above San Andreas.
Businesses
Businesses from Grand Theft Auto IV make a reappearance. New businesses emerge, such as the Bugstars pest control company, which specialises in fumigation, and the Up-n-Atom Burger fast-food restaurant. Takeaway food from restaurants such as Burger Shot is no longer an option. Instead, the player can only purchase drinks from the various Vending Machines scattered throughout the map.
Weapons
Weapons in the game include the Norinco Type 56-2 assault rifles with sound suppressors, mounted flashlights, olive drab polymer furniture, and side-folding stocks. There is now the option to mount attachments to various guns, each of which affects performance. Melee weapons such as the nightstick and golf club, which were not available in Grand Theft Auto IV, have also been added to Grand Theft Auto V.
Character Customization
The player can customise the wardrobe and appearance of the three protagonists in the game. There is less customisation available than in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (for example, changing the body mass of the three characters is not available as it was with Carl Johnson in San Andreas). After being absent from previous titles in the HD Universe, tattoo parlours, barber shops, and the ability to apply and remove facial hair have returned to GTA San Andreas.
Multiplayer
Grand Theft Auto Online is a standalone multiplayer game title, considered a separate game by Rockstar, that is included for free with the retail copy of Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. In Grand Theft Auto Online, the player will be able to explore alone or with friends, work cooperatively (PvE) to complete missions, band together to participate in activities and ambient events, or compete (PvP) in traditional game modes and in Free Mode with the entire community. Initially, the online game used the same San Andreas map as Grand Theft Auto V. This was later expanded to include the island of Cayo Perico. The game incorporates some GTA-style achievements and mechanics.
Multiplayer crews from Max Payne 3 can be transferred to GTA Online. GTA Online includes multiplayer elements that are linked to Rockstar's Social Club. Sessions on the previous PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions could accommodate up to sixteen players, and thirty players on the current PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC versions.
GTA Online will be released as a standalone game on March 15, 2022, and will be available for free on PlayStation 5 for the first three months. Access to Grand Theft Auto V is optional and must be purchased separately as an add-on to the game.

Characters and Premise
"Los Santos: a sprawling sun-soaked metropolis full of self-help gurus, starlets, and fading celebrities that was once the envy of the Western world but is now struggling to stay afloat in an era of economic uncertainty and cheap reality TV." In the midst of the chaos, three very different criminals plot their own chances of survival and success: Franklin, a former street gangster looking for real opportunities and serious money; Michael, a professional ex-con whose retirement isn't going as well as he had hoped; and Trevor, a violent maniac driven by the prospect of a cheap high and the next big score. Out of options, the crew puts everything on the line in a series of daring and dangerous heists that could cost them their lives."
Michael is a retired professional bank robber who, after striking a favourable deal with the FIB, is forced to return to the life of crime.
Trevor is the story's loose cannon, as well as Michael's long-time best friend and a hothead psychopath.
Finally, Franklin, a younger gangbanger and repossession agent with extensive driving experience, meets Michael during a repossession.
Amanda, Michael's wife; Jimmy and Tracey, Michael's two grown-up children; Lamar, Franklin's closest friend; Ron, Trevor's paranoid friend; and Lester, a long-time associate of Michael and Trevor, are among the other main characters.
Timeframe
Although it is not specified when the game will take place in 2013, the following evidence suggests August - October 2013:
- On the side of a Davis strip mall, a sign advertises a "Summer Sale on flat-screen TVs."
- Trevor's trailer's calendar is set to the month of August.
- When Michael meets with Lester to persuade him to come out of retirement, the calendar in Lester's House reads September.
- Franklin opens a bank statement on his entry sideboard after moving into 3671 Whispymound Drive. Close inspection of the enhanced version reveals that it is his September statement for August transactions.
- During the mission "Cleaning out the Bureau," a calendar seen briefly in Harvey Molina's apartment is also open on September.
- Toward the end/completion of the storyline, one of the barbers in Sandy Shores may make a remark about how "October already" it is.
- Pumpkins can be found on the front porches of some homes. Pumpkins are rarely seen at any other time of year than autumn.
- The text message that the creators of Space Monkey 3D send the player after completing Monkey Mosaics in the enhanced edition of the game states that the film will be released during the holiday season, implying that the story will take place in late summer to fall.
Unique Features
- Instead of several islands, the map now depicts a single landmass. In addition, the entire map is unlocked from the start of the game, unlike previous games where sections of the map were unlocked as the player progressed through the game, with reasons such as "terrorist threat," "hurricane," or "earthquake" given in those games.

Furthermore, unlike previous games, where sections of the map were unlocked as the player progressed through the game, with reasons such as "terrorist threat," "hurricane," or "earthquake" given in those games, the entire map is unlocked from the start of the game.
- Unlike any other Grand Theft Auto game, players can play as animals (enhanced version).
Editions
Enhanced and PC Versions
There was much speculation and anticipation surrounding an official announcement from Rockstar prior to the announcement of the eighth generation consoles and PC versions. At the time of the announcement, there was a petition on change.org with over 728,000 signatures requesting a PC version. Many people asked for a PC/Next Gen release in the comments section of the Rockstar Newswire and on many other GTA-related blogs. Following its announcement at E3, 2014, the news spread like wildfire and quickly became one of the most talked-about announcements.
The enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto V was released on November 18, 2014, for the PS4 and Xbox One, and on April 14, 2015, for the PC. There are many improvements and changes in this release compared to the versions released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Other than increased Draw Distance and 4K capable quality, there are no significant graphical differences between the PC version and the PS4 and Xbox One versions. The PC version also includes two exclusive radio stations: The Lab (which is now available on all consoles thanks to the Ill-Gotten Gains Part 2 update) and Self Radio.
