Far Cry 6 is a first-person shooter action game developed by Ubisoft Toronto and published by Ubisoft in 2021. It is the sixth main instalment in the Far Cry series, and it follows Far Cry 5 from 2018. The game takes place on the fictitious Caribbean island of Yara, which is ruled by "El Presidente" Antón Castillo (Giancarlo Esposito), who is grooming his son Diego (Anthony Gonzalez) to continue in his footsteps. Players assume the role of guerilla combatant Dani Rojas (voiced by Nisa Gunduz or Sean Rey), who is aiming to overthrow Castillo's authority. Players fight hostile soldiers and deadly wildlife with a variety of weapons and devices in this action and exploration game. Many components of role-playing games are present in the game, such as a levelling system and side quests. It also has a multiplayer cooperative option.

On October 7, 2021, Far Cry 6 was released globally on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia, and Amazon Luna. It garnered a mixed response, with critics complimenting the slight changes to the series' gameplay formula but criticising the story, lack of creativity, and ageing design. Following that, a slew of downloadable content was released, including three expansion packs based on antagonists from previous Far Cry games.

Far Cry 6 is an action-adventure first-person shooter game set in an open world area that the player can explore on foot or by using numerous land, water, and air vehicles, similar to the previous games in the series. The planet is separated into seven primary sections, each with a different type of geography, ranging from dense rainforests and metropolitan areas to mountain ranges and wide oceans. The emphasis in the game is on armed and close-quarters fighting. Players can choose from a variety of traditional weaponry (such as sidearms, assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, light-machine guns, sniper rifles and grenade launchers). Materials from all across the world can be used to customise firearms.

The game includes various prototypes of exotic weaponry known as "Resolver weapons," each of which adds a different perk to the player's loadout, such as a silent close-range nailgun or a sling-shot projectile weapon that fires CDs. The "Supremo" backpacks are another new addition, allowing players to enhance their playstyle by attaching more benefits to their loadout, such as shooting homing missiles or seeing foes through solid objects. Players can holster guns in this game, unlike previous instalments in the series, and as a result, opposing NPCs will not attack the player on sight unless they are in restricted regions.

The player can build and upgrade guerrilla bases known as "Camp Facilities," which provide useful resources and in-game bonuses for improving the character's skillset, unlocking fast travel locations throughout Yara, enlisting new recruits and managing their equipment, or launching friendly NPC operations.  The game's "Amigos" companion system, which offers recruitable animals with a variety of talents and bonuses tasked to assist the player in combat and exploration, replaces Far Cry 5's "Fangs for Hire" companion system.

Setting and characters

Far Cry 6 is set in 2021 in the fictitious Caribbean state of Yara, which is reminiscent of Cuba (though Cuba is also present in the game), and is characterised as "the largest Far Cry playground to yet." The despotic military dictatorship of Yara is commanded by "El Presidente" Antón Castillo (voiced by Giancarlo Esposito and modelled after him), who is grooming his son Diego (Anthony Gonzalez) to succeed him. The player takes on the role of Dani Rojas, a local Yaran rebel and former Yaran military conscript turned guerrilla fighter who wishes to flee Castillo's ruthless crackdown on Yaran civil society for the American metropolis of Miami. At the start of the game, the player can choose Dani's gender.

Development

Far Cry 6 had been in development for four years when it was announced in July 2020, with Ubisoft Toronto serving as the game's principal studio. According to narrative director Navid Khavari, when they began researching past revolutions, they came across the concept of a modern guerrilla revolution, such as the Cuban Revolution, which provided them with numerous ideas for how to motivate the player-character to fight against a repressive government. In contrast to recent Far Cry games in which the protagonist was quiet, this brought back the requirement to give the player-character, Dani Rojas, a voice. "It was critical for us to guarantee that the protagonist has a personal investment in that revolution," Khavari explained. Using Cuba as a source of inspiration also established a return to a tropical environment, which was a characteristic of earlier Far Cry games, as well as giving the setting a "timeless" aesthetic due to the island's economic blockades, which mixed old cars with modern weapons. To help develop the setting, Khavari spent a month in Cuba interviewing with locals.

Diego is also voiced by Anthony Gonzalez, who also provides the character model and motion capture.  Esposito and Gonzalez had completed the motion capture and voice work for the game's trailer before shooting any of the game's narrative footage, allowing the developers to work on the game's character models. For Esposito, the motion capture aspects of the part piqued his attention, since he had done some for the aborted Mouse Guard film and wanted to do more, as well as the type of persona Ubisoft had built for him. Khavari claimed that they had sent Esposito background information to assist him prepare for the game before recording, and that during these sessions, he discovered that Esposito had "He's already done a lot of research based on the materials we sent him. He has an uncanny ability to empathise with his characters, and he did it with Antón in a way I didn't expect."

Reception

According to review aggregator Metacritic, Far Cry 6 garnered "generally positive" reviews for the Xbox Series X/S versions, but "mixed or mediocre" reviews for the Windows and PlayStation 5 versions.

According to Jon Ryan's IGN review, "Far Cry 6 smooths out a lot of the kinks that have appeared in previous Far Cry games. It's the finest the series has been in years, despite numerous flaws, particularly with its new inventory system." Jordan Devore of Destructoid penned the piece "Solid and unquestionably appealing to an audience. There may be some difficult-to-ignore flaws, but the experience is enjoyable."

Despite the game's overt political theme, Polygon's Diego Arguello believes Far Cry 6 "is a waste of potential," criticising its Latin American stereotypes and believing it fumbled any attempt at saying something meaningful, citing an instance "in which you rescue refugees by using a weapon that plays Macarena while you're aiming down its sights." [58] Matthew Gault, writing for Vice, slammed the game and called it "creatively and morally bankrupt," noting that his article "isn't a review" because he couldn't keep playing it. Alex Santa Maria of Screen Rant and Zack Zwiezen of Kotaku both criticised Far Cry 6 for being too similar to its predecessors.
