God of War III is a hack and slash action-adventure computer game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). It is the fifth game in the God of War series, the seventh chronologically, and the sequel to 2007's God of War II. It was published for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system on March 16, 2010. The game is set in ancient Greece, with retribution as its core theme, and is loosely based on Greek mythology. After his father Zeus, King of the Olympian gods, betrayed him, the player takes control of Kratos, the former God of War. Kratos ascends Mount Olympus, reigniting the Great War, until the Titan Gaia abandons him. Kratos, guided by Athena's soul, confronts monsters, gods, and Titans in search of Pandora, without whom he will not be able to open Pandora's Box, destroy Zeus, and bring an end to the Olympian gods' reign of terror.

The gameplay is similar to previous iterations, focused on combo-based fighting using the player's primary weapon, the Blades of Exile, as well as additional weapons obtained throughout the game. It employs quick time events, in which the player must perform in a predetermined order to beat powerful opponents and bosses. The game includes puzzles and platforming aspects, and the player can use up to four magical assaults and a power-enhancing ability as alternate fighting options. God of War III features a redesigned magic system, additional adversaries, new camera perspectives, and downloadable content when compared to prior games.

God of War III earned positive reviews upon release, with praise for the aesthetics, gameplay, and scope, despite conflicting reviews for the plot. At the 2009 and 2010 Spike Video Game Awards, the game won "Most Anticipated Game of 2010" and "Best PS3 Game," respectively, as well as the "Artistic Achievement" award at the 2011 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Video Game Awards. It sold almost 5.2 million copies worldwide by June 2012, making it the second best-selling game in the God of War series and the ninth best-selling PlayStation 3 game of all time. It was included in the God of War Saga, which was released for PlayStation 3 on August 28, 2012. On July 14, 2015, a remastered edition of God of War III Remastered was published for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the God of War franchise. God of War: Ascension, a prequel to 2005's God of War, was released on March 12, 2013, as the series' next instalment. On April 20, 2018, a real sequel simply titled God of War was published, reimagining the game and shifting the backdrop to Norse mythology.

Gameplay

God of War III is an action-adventure game with elements of hack and slash. It's a single-player third-person shooter. In combo-based combat, platforming, and puzzle games, the player controls Kratos from a fixed-camera perspective, like in previous iterations. Centaurs, harpies, chimaeras, cyclopes, satyrs, minotaurs, Sirens, cerberuses, and Gorgons are among the adversaries. To progress through the game, the player must climb walls and ladders, jump across chasms, and swing on ropes. The puzzles vary in difficulty: some just demand the placement of objects in a precise order, while others, like one with Guitar Hero-like features, require timing and precision. Minotaur Horns are a new item to find, in addition to Gorgon Eyes and Phoenix Feathers from prior games. Whereas the eyes and feathers boost the player's life and magic, the horns boost the items metre, allowing them to utilise more "Items," or supplementary weapons.

Combat

The Blades of Exile are Kratos' main weapon, replacing the Blades of Athena from prior instalments and the game's opening moments. The weapon consists of a pair of blades that are hooked to chains that wrap around Kratos' wrists and forearms and can be flung in a variety of ways. Kratos gains additional weapons, like the Claws of Hades, the Nemean Cestus, and the Nemesis Whip, as well as new fighting options, throughout the game. The Nemean Cestus, a pair of gauntlets, and the Nemesis Whip, a weapon akin to the Blades of Exile, are required to progress in certain areas of the game; for example, the Nemean Cestus is required to break through onyx-based artefacts.

The relics Poseidon's Trident, the Golden Fleece, and Icarus' Wings, which were obtained in earlier games, are kept and used to overcome environmental hurdles, with the Golden Fleece being used to repel opponent attacks. Kratos can swim in the River Styx thanks to Hades' Soul. In this game, the Blade of Olympus, a primary weapon in God of War II, is combined with the unique ability Rage of Sparta to grant temporary invulnerability and increased attack damage.

Development

God of War developer and game director David Jaffe detailed his original plan for the series in a 2007 interview with GameTrailers, which differed from the final ending of God of War III, which was based on game director Stig Asmussen's vision. "God of War explains, or will eventually explain, why there are no more Greek myths," Jaffe posited. It would have been "horror on earth," he claimed, as the gods and Titans wrestled for dominance. After Kratos murdered Zeus and the other Greek gods, other mythological pantheons would have become involved, and humanity would have lost faith in the gods—which, according to Jaffe, is the only way a god can genuinely die. God of War III was first discussed at a God of War II launch event by God of War II game director Cory Barlog. According to Barlog, the game will have a full 1080p HD resolution (which will be altered to 720p in the final release) and will include Sixaxis tilt and vibration. Because the Sixaxis controller does not enable rumble, this was announced before the DualShock 3 controller was released, causing confusion. The Sixaxis tilt capability was disabled during the 2009 Game Developers Conference (GDC) because the creative team "did not identify a good location to implement Sixaxis in the game successfully." Sony announced that God of War III would be the series' final instalment in December 2008. John Hight, however, told Joystiq in January 2010: "While God of War III will bring the trilogy to a close, it will not be the final instalment in the series... What we do next is going to be extremely cautious ", The game would be distributed with the usual challenge mode, and new challenge modes may be offered as downloadable content to keep the series going, according to Asmussen. Sony was rumoured to be soliciting feedback from PlayStation 3 owners in March 2009 about a collector's edition. An Ultimate Edition for North America was revealed in October, followed by an Ultimate Trilogy Edition for Europe.

Technical

One of the most difficult aspects of developing God of War III for the PlayStation 3 was the "complexity of everything," according to Asmussen; individual tasks, such as designing Helios' decapitation, could take a year because the "level of detail [expected] was so high and intricate, it [crossed] multiple departments." He claimed that the PlayStation 3's hardware capabilities gave him more freedom in character design and environment interaction. Kratos' character model in the PlayStation 2 (PS2) games had around 5,000 polygons; the PS3 model had over 20,000 – a large number, but not as high as Nathan Drake's model in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, which had 35,000. Asmussen stated that one of the most difficult aspects of making God of War III was the enhanced texture detail. Ken Feldman, the art director, stated that the polygon count was not the sole influence in Kratos' realistic appearance. To add realism to the basic model and greatly expand the range of animation accessible, the developers adopted a novel technique called blended normal mapping (e.g., muscle movement, including visible veins, and facial animations). Although the voice performers' facial movements were recorded by Image Metrics' performance capture system, all of the main characters were animated by hand because animators did more effective work than basic motion capture. The animators built a separate animation code called as Dynamic Simulation for animating elements like hair, which allows the PS3 to mathematically determine how it should look; it accurately generates motion that previously took the animators lengthy hours to reproduce.

Soundtrack

Gerard K. Marino, Ron Fish, Mike Reagan, Jeff Rona, and Cris Velasco composed God of War III: Original Soundtrack from the Video Game, which was included as downloadable content in the God of War III Ultimate Edition and Ultimate Trilogy Edition in March and April 2010. SCE and Sumthing Else published the album's CD on March 30. The Czech National Symphony Chorus and the Skywalker Session Orchestra recorded the soundtrack. Each composer contributed a distinct aesthetic to the soundtrack, such as Marino's moody, rhythmic, and percussive approach, and Fish's despondent and sombre tones. Mike Reagan stated in an interview with Game Music Online that while the composers may have used each other's tunes, they did not cooperate. Clint Bajakian, Senior Music Supervisor at Sony, and his crew, according to Reagan, were the true collaborators. "We were able to explore more melodic progression than we were on the first [God of War]," Reagan said of the composers' work on God of War III. The score was recorded under the new American Federation of Musicians video game agreement, and the composers were able to record locally with some of the best musicians in the world thanks to Sony's vision and support. Clint Bajakian detailed the many ensembles that recorded the score in an interview with PlayStation.Blog: The brass section serves as the "lead guitar," the choir provides the game's epic feel, the strings provide the sound's body, and the percussion serves as the "drum kit."
